Dr David Flannery is a practicing M.D. Geneticist and Director of Telegenetics and Digital Genetics at Cleveland Clinic, where his team is creating the digital future of genetic services using synchronous telemedicine, eConsults and chatbots. Cleveland Clinic's CEO prioritized virtual care even before the COVID pandemic. The Cleveland Clinic Genetics service, formerly named the Center for Personalized Genetic Health (CPGH) has been able to sustain virtual care post-pandemic. Currently more than 50% of Genetic encounters are still virtual. CPGH began eConsults for Genetics in October 2019, and has performed over 1200 eConsults,which is the most extensive experience for Genetics in North America. CPGH developed a chatbot for pre-test counseling for patients referred for Pharmacogenomic testing, which has been well-received and leads to ~ 50% of PGx patients’ initial visit being for results disclosure. The chatbot in action can be demonstrated for the audience.
From February 2014 to May 2018 Dr Flannery served as Medical Director of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. Prior to ACMG he was at the Medical College of where he served in a succession of clinical, academic and medical staff leadership positions. At MCG he started telemedicine genetics clinics in 1995, considered to have been the longest continually running telegenetics services in the nation.
He has served on the boards of directors of multiple telehealth entities. He publishes extensively and is a frequent presenter at national meetings. He has served on national committees/workgroups including the Telehealth Committee of the National Quality Forum and the Digital Medicine Payment Advisory Group for the American Medical Association, the Telemedicine Workgroup for the National Organization for Rare Disorders, and currently serves on the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee and the American Hospital Association’s Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) for Coding Clinic for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS .
