Today’s hospitals rely on a complex ecosystem of digital technologies that neither clinicians nor computer scientists fully understand. This talk will introduce empirical computer science techniques for measuring and understanding the digital infrastructure that modern healthcare depends on. We’ll look at what the internet reveals about hospital assets and how probing those assets can help build a national picture of disruptions to hospital systems. We’ll then look beyond individual assets toward an empirical health connectome, combining measurements of virtual infrastructure with real-world healthcare systems and dependencies to better understand how technology failures propagate, where vulnerabilities may exist, and how health systems can build greater resilience.
